A Women's Cycling Group

ROYALS is a women's cycling group that organizes two women-focused events a year.

Cyclofemme is a global celebration of women cyclists that takes place on Mother's Day (US) each year.

In the fall, ROYALS offers a basic bike maintenance event.

All women interested in bicycling, regardless of experience, are encouraged to participate!

About Us

ROYALS History, Rides and more

The ROYALS is a group of women who meet at least once a month to ride their bikes together. The group was formed in September 2003 by Tammy Schurr and Terri Gaussoin (who now lives elsewhere). There are more than 100 women on the e-mail list; however, our rides usually are smaller in number.

We have three groups that ride on the third Saturday of each month (except December).

Leisurely Ride – These rides are 8 - 12 leisurely-paced miles (average 5-7 mph) with a leader familiar with the route. Rides are mostly on low-traffic roads or multi-use paths and are on both pavement and gravel. Hybrid, mountain, and comfort bikes with wide tires are recommended. This is a great ride for women who haven’t been on their bikes in a long time. There are some women who enjoy the sociability of a quieter ride and make these rides their “regular” ride.

Standard Ride – These rides are generally 20-25 moderately-paced miles (average 12-14 mph) on a relatively flat paved route with some traffic; either a road bike or a hybrid bike is fine for these rides. This is the “standard ride” for women who have developed skills riding on roads with traffic but are not training for a competitive ride. Riders are not dropped, and if anyone needs a break, the group will stop.

Training Ride – These rides are far longer, faster and more intense (30-35 miles, average 15-17 sustained mph) on pavement. A road bike is necessary to be able to keep up. This ride is specifically for women who are training for century rides or other fitness events. This group rarely converses or stops while riding (except for traffic signals). We may ride in traffic and seek out hills or flats for speedwork. Riders who cannot keep up may be dropped. This group does its socializing at brunch!

All riders are invited to meet at The Bean for brunch after the rides. Brunch begins two hours after the Leisurely Ride start time. If you can’t join us for one of the rides, please consider joining us for brunch. We have a lot of fun at brunch and it’s a great time for all of the ROYALS to get to know other each other better. Many friendships have developed over brunch!

We occasionally sponsor Friends & Family rides. Two of our most popular Friends & Family Rides are the Bosque del Apache Ride and the White Sands Moonlight Ride.ROYALS members are welcome to invite spouses, partners, friends, and family to these rides.

We also occasionally sponsor training sessions on bike maintenance and bicycle riding skills for ROYALS riders at a nominal fee. The ROYALS bike club is a member of the League of American Bicyclist and we follow the League’s recommendations on safe and effective cycling. To learn more about the League, please visit www.bikeleague.org.

We welcome you to the ROYALS Notifications of upcoming rides are sent via the entire ROYALS e-mail list. We do not share email addresses or member’s names with anyone outside of the ROYALS membership. We do occasionally forward items of interest about local, state, and national bicycle issues; we will not forward items sent to us on any topic other than cycling to the ROYALS list.

We hope to see you on your bicycle soon!
